HERE IS A VIRUS THAT YOU ACTUALLY MIGHT WANT TO HAVE ON YOUR COMPUTER!
The Virus synth was first in production back in 1997 and has been through several iterations since then.
Now a dedicated group of people are reverse engineering the Motorola DSP563xx processor that was used in the virus range of synths, and it has now been made possible to grab a virus software emulator for use within your DAW.
Even better, and thanks to the Komplete Kontrol user forum there are now NKS preset banks for the original factory presets available.
HOW TO GET INFECTED – IN A NICE WAY!
The virus emulation is free, however there are a few hoops to jump through in order to collect the components you need in order to make the entire recipe work.
First of all you will need to head to the DSP 56000 Blog page where you can download the emulator dll files for your computer.
There are a few notes on this page along with the download links, so it’s worth reading these in case they apply to your computer setup.
The NKS presets have been made for VST3, so you only need this version for your system in either MAC or Windows formats, both are available here:
https://dsp56300.wordpress.com/osirus/
The archive will just contain the vst3 file, which as there is no dedicated installer, needs to be placed in your VST3 folder, on Windows this will be:
c:\program files\common files\vst3
Next up, it is necessary to obtain the binary files for the original factory roms, these can be found on a separate website in a large table, rows 16 to 18 are the ones required.
here is the link to the synthesizer rom archive:
https://dbwbp.com/index.php/9-misc/37-synth-eprom-dumps
These roms when unzipped should provide .bin files for both the virus B & virus C, and need to be placed into the same location as the Osirus.vst3 plug-in from the first step.
It’s worth mentioning that the vst3 plug-in is unsighned, so it is possible that your DAW may ignore it when scanned in.
In Reaper this was easily remedied by going to preferences and then vst, where there is a rescan option, and here the Osirus vst plugin was listed as being aavailable for rescan.
NKS Presets
The third step is to download and install the NKS presets, these can be found here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/acg8a4bk85y4dpz/Osirus%20VST3%20NKS.zip?dl=1
The usual installation procedure process applies here, unarchive the content, place the Osirus folder found inside the user content folder into your own user content location, and copy and drop the NI Resources folder onto the folder with the same name on your system, on Windows this will be at:
c:\users\public\public documents\NI Resources
Now with all of those components in place, open Komplete Kontrol and rescan your plug-ins folder and your user library folder.
Once finished, close KK standalone, open up your DAW, load an instance of Komplete Kontrol, head to the user side of the browser, under the vendor name of ‘The usual Suspects’ you should find Osirus as a product, now enjoy over 1000 virus presets!
